In today’s busy world, children are constantly taking in information from school, technology, activities and everyday life. Sometimes their minds simply need a chance to slow down.
One of the easiest ways to encourage this is through Mindful colouring.
Although colouring may seem like a simple activity, when it is done mindfully it becomes much more than filling in a picture. It gives children (and adults!) the opportunity to relax, focus on the present moment and enjoy spending quality time together.
Whether you have five minutes after school or an hour on a rainy weekend, mindful colouring is a wonderful activity the whole family can enjoy.
What is Mindful Colouring?
Mindful colouring is the practice of colouring slowly and intentionally while paying attention to the present moment.
Instead of rushing to finish the picture or worrying about staying inside the lines, children are encouraged to notice:
- the colours they choose
- the movement of the pencil or crayon
- the shapes and patterns
- their breathing
- how their body feels while colouring
There is no right or wrong way to colour mindfully.
The goal isn’t creating the “perfect” picture.
The goal is simply enjoying the process.
The Benefits of Mindful Colouring for Children
Encourages Calm and Relaxation
Colouring naturally slows children down.
As they focus on one section at a time, their breathing often becomes slower and their bodies begin to relax. This can be especially helpful after school, before bedtime or during busy days when emotions are running high.
Supports Emotional Wellbeing
Children don’t always have the words to explain how they’re feeling.
Mindful colouring gives them a quiet space to process emotions without pressure.
Many children naturally become calmer while colouring, making it easier to talk about feelings afterwards.
Improves Concentration
Staying focused on colours, patterns and small details encourages children to practice sustained attention.
Over time, this can help develop concentration skills that are useful for learning, reading and everyday activities.
Builds Fine Motor Skills
Holding pencils, crayons or markers strengthens the small muscles in children’s hands.
These fine motor skills support handwriting, drawing, cutting and many everyday tasks.
Sparks Creativity
There are no rules about which colours should be used.
Children are free to experiment, imagine and express themselves however they choose, helping build confidence in their own creative ideas.
The Benefits for the Whole Family
Mindful colouring isn’t just for children.
Parents, grandparents and carers often discover they enjoy it just as much!
Colouring together provides a wonderful opportunity to:
- slow down together after a busy day
- enjoy screen-free family time
- encourage conversations naturally
- reduce stress
- create positive family memories
- strengthen relationships through shared activities
Sometimes the best conversations happen when everyone’s hands are busy.
How to Make Colouring More Mindful
You don’t need any special equipment.
Simply gather some colouring pages, pencils or crayons and create a calm space.
You could also try:
- taking three slow breaths before you begin
- playing gentle instrumental music
- colouring quietly for five minutes
- noticing how each colour makes you feel
- talking about your favourite part afterwards
- focusing on enjoying the process rather than finishing quickly
The simpler it is, the easier it becomes to turn colouring into a calming family routine.
Pair Colouring with Breathing
One of my favourite ways to extend mindful colouring is by adding a simple breathing exercise.
Before colouring, try taking five slow balloon breaths:
- Breathe in slowly through your nose.
- Imagine filling a balloon inside your tummy.
- Slowly breathe out through your mouth.
After a few calming breaths, children often settle into colouring more easily and stay focused for longer.
When is the Best Time for Mindful Colouring?
Mindful colouring can fit into almost any part of the day.
Many families enjoy colouring:
- after school to help children transition home
- before homework as a calming reset
- before bedtime
- during quiet time
- on rainy days
- while waiting at appointments
- during school holidays
- as part of a family wellbeing routine
Even ten minutes can make a difference.
Creating a Calm Corner
Many families love creating a small “calm corner” at home.
Include:
- printable mindful colouring pages
- coloured pencils or crayons
- breathing cards
- a feelings chart
- soft cushions
- calming music
- favourite books
Children soon learn this is a safe place to pause, breathe and reset whenever they need it.
Mindfulness Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated
Sometimes we think mindfulness requires long meditation sessions or complete silence.
For children, mindfulness often looks much simpler.
- It can be colouring.
- It can be drawing.
- It can be breathing.
- It can simply be spending a few quiet minutes fully focused on one enjoyable activity.
These small moments help children develop lifelong skills in emotional regulation, resilience and self-awareness.
Mindful colouring is one of the easiest ways to introduce mindfulness into everyday family life.
It’s inexpensive, screen-free, relaxing and suitable for children of all ages.
Most importantly, it reminds us that slowing down together doesn’t have to be complicated.
A few colouring pages, some pencils and a little uninterrupted time can create moments of calm, creativity and connection that your family will treasure.
