Father’s Day does not need to be all about finding the perfect present. Sometimes the moments children remember most are the simple ones: laughing together, being a little silly and spending time with someone they love.
A short family yoga session is a lovely way for dads and kids to connect through movement, teamwork and play. There is no need for fancy equipment, yoga experience or perfectly balanced poses. Just find a little space, take off your shoes and enjoy the moment together.
These easy Father’s Day yoga poses and mindfulness activities are suitable for a range of ages and can be adapted for mums, grandparents, uncles, carers and other special grown-ups, too.
Because family connection does not have to look the same for everyone.
Why Try Family Yoga for Father’s Day?
Children often connect best through play and shared experiences. Family yoga creates opportunities to move together, practise teamwork and enjoy a few calm moments in amongst the excitement of the day.
It can help children:
- Build confidence and body awareness.
- Practice balance, coordination and listening.
- Explore breathing techniques that support calm.
- Feel connected to a parent or trusted grown-up.
- Enjoy movement without pressure or competition.
- Create positive memories together.
For grown-ups, it is also a gentle reminder that you do not need to be an expert to join in. Showing up, having a go and sharing a laugh are what matter most.
Before You Begin
Choose a comfortable space where everyone has room to move. You might practise in the lounge room, outside in the backyard or at a local park.
Keep a few simple things in mind:
- Wear comfortable clothes.
- Move slowly and stop if anything feels uncomfortable.
- Let children choose whether they would like to hold hands or practise side by side.
- Keep partner poses gentle: no pulling, lifting or climbing on another person.
- Expect a few wobbles and giggles. They are part of the fun.
You can try every activity below or simply choose your favourites for a five-minute Father’s Day movement break.
1. Superhero Mountain Pose
Start by standing side by side with your feet comfortably apart.
Stretch tall, place your hands on your hips and imagine you are both strong, brave superheroes getting ready for an adventure.
Take a big breath in and reach your arms overhead. As you breathe out, bring your hands back to your hips.
Try saying together:
“We are strong, steady and ready for fun.”
You can make it extra playful by coming up with superhero names for each other or striking your best superhero pose.
Why children enjoy it: Mountain Pose helps children feel grounded and confident while giving everyone an easy place to begin.
2. Mirror-Me Stretch
Stand facing each other. One person is the leader and the other becomes their mirror.
The leader might:
- Reach both arms up high.
- Stretch arms out wide.
- Bend gently from side to side.
- Shrug shoulders up and down.
- Wiggle fingers.
- Stand on tiptoes.
- Make a funny superhero face.
The mirror copies every movement as closely as possible.
After a minute, swap roles and let your child take the lead.
Father’s Day twist: Ask your child, “What funny move do you think Dad should try?”
This simple activity encourages focus, observation and plenty of laughter.
3. Teamwork Tree Pose
Stand next to each other and gently hold hands if you would like some extra support.
Place one foot on your ankle or lower leg, keeping your toes on the ground if balancing feels tricky. Avoid placing your foot directly against your knee.
Reach your outside arm up like a branch.
Imagine you are two trees growing side by side.
Can you sway gently in the breeze without losing your balance?
Try these playful variations:
- Grow tall like a strong gum tree.
- Wiggle your fingers like leaves.
- Pretend a cheeky kookaburra has landed in your branches.
- Switch sides and grow a whole new tree.
For younger children: Keep both feet on the ground and simply reach your arms up like branches.
For older children: Try holding the pose without holding hands.
4. High Five Warrior Pose
Stand facing each other, leaving enough room to move comfortably.
Step one foot forward and bend your front knee gently. Keep your back leg strong and reach your arms out wide.
If you are close enough, reach forward and share a gentle high five.
Then say:
“We make a great team!”
Swap your feet and try again on the other side.
You can make it even more fun by choosing different high-five styles:
- Slow-motion high five.
- Tiny fingertip high five.
- Superhero high five.
- Silent ninja high five.
Why children enjoy it: Warrior Pose supports strength, coordination and confidence while making teamwork part of the movement.
5. Puppy and Dog Stretch
Start on hands and knees side by side.
Take a moment to wag your imaginary tails.
For a gentle puppy stretch, keep your knees on the ground and walk your hands forward, lowering your chest only as far as feels comfortable.
For Downward Dog, tuck your toes and lift your hips, creating an upside-down V shape.
You might like to:
- Pedal your feet slowly.
- Wag your imaginary tail.
- Make one playful “woof.”
- Look across and check whether your grown-up is being a very silly dog.
Children can stay in Puppy Pose, move into Downward Dog or switch between the two.
The goal is not to make the pose look perfect. It is simply to stretch, move and have fun together.
6. Partner Boat Pose
Sit facing each other with your knees bent and your feet on the floor.
Begin by touching your toes together.
Sit tall and imagine you are both rowing a little boat along a calm river.
For the easiest version, keep your feet on the ground and gently rock your upper body from side to side.
If you both feel comfortable, try lifting one foot at a time and touching the soles of your feet together.
Older children and adults might like to lift both feet, but only if it feels steady and comfortable.
Keep the movement gentle and avoid pulling on each other’s arms.
Ask:
“Where are we sailing today?”
Perhaps you are heading to an island, searching for dolphins or exploring a magical river.
7. Side by Side Bridge Pose
Lie on your backs next to each other with your knees bent and your feet flat on the floor.
Place your arms comfortably by your sides.
As you breathe in, gently lift your hips.
As you breathe out, slowly lower back down.
Repeat a few times, imagining you are building two strong bridges across a river.
You could ask:
- “Who might be crossing our bridges?”
- “Could a tiny mouse fit underneath?”
- “What about a whole family of ducks?”
Keep each bridge separate, with everyone supporting their own body.
Why children enjoy it: Bridge Pose introduces strength and coordination in a way that feels imaginative and achievable.
8. Back to Back Breathing
Finish your yoga poses by sitting back to back.
You can sit cross-legged, stretch your legs out in front or sit on cushions if that feels more comfortable.
Rest your hands in your lap.
Take a slow breath in through your nose.
Then breathe out gently through your mouth.
Can you notice your grown up’s back moving slightly as they breathe?
Can they notice yours?
Take three comfortable breaths together.
There is no need to breathe at exactly the same time. Simply notice that you are both here, sharing a quiet moment.
Try saying: “We can be calm together.”
Father’s Day Breathing Activity: Superhero Power Breath
This playful breathing activity is perfect for children who enjoy pretending to be superheroes.
Stand tall with your feet planted firmly on the floor.
- Breathe in slowly through your nose as you stretch your arms out wide.
- Imagine you are filling up with superhero energy.
- Breathe out gently through your mouth as you bring your hands together at your heart.
- Say quietly, “Strong and kind.”
Repeat three times.
You could also choose a different phrase together, such as:
- “Brave and calm.”
- “Kind and helpful.”
- “We make a great team.”
Remind children that superheroes do not need the biggest muscles or the loudest voices. Sometimes their greatest powers are kindness, patience and helping others.
Another Easy Breathing Activity: Birthday Cake Breaths
Imagine you have made Dad a special Father’s Day cake.
Hold one hand up in front of you with your fingers spread wide. Each finger is a candle.
Take a comfortable breath in through your nose.
Then breathe out gently, pretending to blow out one candle.
Continue until all five candles are out.
Keep each breath soft and steady. There is no need to take huge breaths or blow too hard.
For extra fun, ask your child:
“What flavour is our imaginary Father’s Day cake?”
Chocolate and strawberry? Rainbow sprinkles? Banana and dinosaur?
The sillier the answer, the better.
A Super Easy Father’s Day Yoga Game: Superhero Freeze
Put on a favourite song and move around the room together.
You can march, dance, stretch, hop or pretend to fly.
When the music stops, everyone freezes in a yoga pose.
Try calling out:
- “Superhero Mountain!”
- “Teamwork Tree!”
- “Strong Warrior!”
- “Silly Puppy!”
- “Sleepy Child’s Pose!”
Let children take turns choosing the poses or stopping the music.
For an extra challenge, ask everyone to hold their pose for one slow superhero breath before the music starts again.
There are no winners or losers. The aim is simply to move, laugh and enjoy being together.
